Do aberdeen favour scottish applicants?
Hi,
I really like the look of aberdeen, but the one reservation I have about applying is the fact that its i've heard they favour scottish applicants. I was wondering how much truth there is in this and would it be a 'waste' of a precious ucas slot.
manythanks

haha not this question again. im english and i dont think they do prefer/advantage scottish applicants, i just think not as many english applicants apply, whereas obviously all the scottish applicants will apply because of the fees. unis usually prefer students that pay, thats why they like international students. places want the best, not the closest living people. i think its kinda nice to be different.
they were all always very nice to me anyhow.2008: Aberdeen -int jan-UNCOND OFFER

Well, here goes.
Where to begin. Umm.
SO we were going to this place called HHI, which is a christian based charity in Monze. Anyhoo, we were staying in a campsite across from their compound where we would be working.
So we got there on the 7th and we got straight into pitching our tents in the place least likely to attract ants. This however failed as on various occasions i woke at 5am with then in my hair, an odd experience i tell you.
So there was no beating around the preverbial bush and straight to work we got welding together a water tower from nothing more than scraps of iron lying about. To say the wiring was dodgy was an understatement, there was a live wire wrapped round a nail, which acted as the plug. After a few days we managed to get this 3/4 tonne brute together, and we celebrated by leaving it lying there as we skived off to Lochinvar National Park. There i slept under the stars and saw an african sunset (and sunrise) in its full glory. It really is something else.
So off we set on out bus to try and catch sight of some buffaloes, butr before long we broke down. Now, in the UK we would phone AA or something. Not Zambians. No they much prefer to hack off the petrol tank, siphon off the diesel into 2 large containers, put some rope here and a bit of hose there. Shove the tanks inside the bus, between someones knees and set off again. Magic.
We didnt see much that trip as i think most of us were fearing for our lives as the bus plunged into potholes at impossible angles. All credit to the driver, we only stalled 16times, brokedown 4 times, and abandoned bus twice. Pretty good going.
So we returned from Lochinvar to find out tower still in the same place we left it. Good african efficiency there. Fear not we managed to haul it up with a couple of ropes and some very brave Zambians, who would definately have lost their life if it had fallen. We all then dashed off to Chipembele to build a hut for a grain mill (so they can ground down maize and make food) simple really?? No, no. It was without doubt 2 of the hardest days ogf my life. As we struggled to please ruthless African brickies, survive on bitter oranges and drink our own sweat. Tough i tell thee.
Returning home we cemented the tower into the ground to make it nice and secure, did a few finishing touches here and there, and we were finished our work in Zambia.
Oh i forgot to mention our game with the Zambians. We got absolutely pummeled at a game of football, by what must be the most talented footballers i have ever seen in the world.. the worst bit?? they had no shoes and they still ran us ragged.
So we headed off to Livingstone, on what would be the final part of our journey. Upon arrivalm we all dived into the pool and made quite the raucus. The lack of running water had made us all pretty grotty and this was a heavensent. Then it was dinner time, and i had the best steak i have ever tasted, a lot better than nshima anyhoo. ( a local dish, not disimmilar to a large ball of couscous.)
The next day we awoke early (well normal time in comparison to what we had been waking up at) to go on our safari. This was pretty good. We got to see buffalo, zebras, giraffe, impala and monkeys all in their habitats. Somehow we managed to avoid seeing the biggest animal on the plante, the elephant, as it was proving to be elusive.
Fear not, straight back to livingstone we went and off to victoria falls we went. And what a trip that was. They are truly mind blowing, such beauty just there infront of you. Cliched as it sounds, it really is teh most beautiful thing you will ever see in your life. I took well over 50 photos, and not one of them was bad. I kid you not. We had to leave unfortunately. I could quite happily have stayed there all day.
However, pizza beckoned and Funky Munky called us forth. They served us possibly the best pizza in the world. T'was good times.
After our pizza, it was a quick display of acrobatics from some of our more gymnastic members poolside, and we were off to our sunset cruise down by the zambezi.
Here, we had free drinks, free food and a great end to the goliday. And the best bit?? Just as we were heading back to shore, we spotted that ever elusive Elephant coming out the jungle towards teh river. Then another and before we knew it we had 2 elephants drinking from the river. What a way to finish the trip.
Then we were back at livingstone, at our aptly named Fawlty Towers campsite for our last real night before we started travelling.
After a brief stop off at Monze to say our goodbyes, we booked into a Salvation Army station in Lusaka to spend our last night, then we flew home.
It was without doubt one of the best experiences of my life, and i would go back in an instant.
