When you start, they have a medical freshers fayre and there are people like the BMA there to get you to sign up for free trials of stuff. This year if you signed up for the BMA you got a cheap voucher for a stethoscope but it had to be used by december, so a lot of people got them as Christmas presents lol! But a word of warning, when you get yours for 2nd year DO NOT get Dr Whatever engraved on it - I've heard stories of people doing that and the stories are still being handed down through the years - you will get slagged mercilessly! But it's still very exciting to get one and you get them in pretty colours too!

I would like one early too. On work experience I 'borrowed' one of the med students stethoscopes and went to lunch with it around my neck and it gets respect aye. Behold the power of the scope. They also said someone in their year had spent like £2000 on a teaching stethoscope or something that actually diagnoses conditions for you! Hold it up on someones chest and it goes something like "this is Aortic Stinosis". Not looking forward to that. Consultants and SHO's let me hear a few different conditions and honestly most of them sounded almost exactly the same to my untrained ears.
Yeah, I think the tradition is either you get the one you've used through school engraved with Dr BLA or your family buys you an expensive hot one engraved with Dr BLA. Either way, it's pretty chic.

I'm looking forward to it, it'll be fun.

Doubt I'll be paying £2000 for one though...

hehe. I got bored so searched for stethoscopes.. look at this. It is pink and for a good cause! You know you want one

Aside from that I am not impressed by colour options. Burgundy? Plum? Navy? Nah.

Also they actually start at £10 but I suspect they will be cheap and nasty.. How many options do you get when buying one?? It's like getting a car. 'this one has the latest <insert acronym here> technology...'
