Aberdeen for Clinicals
Hey - do you know if it's possible to do clinicals at Aberdeen after doing pre-clinical at somewhere like Oxbridge or St. Andrews?

I know that the Scottish Executive were examining ways of allowing and encouraging pre-clinical students at St Andrews to do their clinical at a Scottish Uni as there is evidence to show that thos who graduate from a Scottish medschool are more likely to saty and practice in Scotland. I would imagine that by the time you got through three years at st Andrews, if you got in in 2006, there would be a smoother path from there to clinical but it would be more likely be a link up to Dundee.

Oki, thanks alot dude.
The thing is that I really want to go to go to Aberdeen, so I'm thinking if I don't get in I can do pre-clinical somewhere like St. Andrews or Cambridge (both of which I *really* like) then go to Aberdeen for clinicals.

so many medschools, so little power to choose which one you go to. I wouldn't get fixated on Aberdeen or anywhere for that matter. Your choice of schools to date and looking ahead shows you have no particular geographic fix in mind so would you not be better just concentrating on getting the very best A level grades you can and then chosing medschools to apply to accordingly? I know Aberdeen is good and has pushed the right buttons for you but I am certain you would enjoy and succeed no matter where you went. Are you looking to apply to go to St Andrews because it has lower entrance criteria? I ask bacause I thought you liked Aberdeen among other things because you got clinical exposure early on which you clearly dont get to anything like the same extent at St Andrews.

Oh, why thank you :-)
I'm not too fussed about early patient contact. Before they rejected me I had my heart set on Cambridge and they have really very little patient contact. St. Andrews have actually increased to AAB now anyway. From last year I know that the chances of getting in at your number 1 aren't big - so this year I am making sure that I am 100% positive that I love each of the unis to bits before I applied. Then again I thought I was 100% on Cardiff, then realised I hated the place.

St Andrews students who go to Aberdeen have to go into the second year, as correctomondo says, making it a bit pointless as you have to repeat a lot. It is best to either go to Aberdeen for the whole course from Year 1, or to go to St Andrews and then go on to Manchester (or possibly Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge or London if places are available that year).

I seem to remember getting a right royal slagging in the past for suggesting that prospective students should make the effort and go to the expense of visiting and finding out as much as they can about unis before they applied. Glas to see someone agrees with me.

I would've gone to open days last year but my mum was recovering from surgery and it wasn't really fair to keep leaving her to go to places like Aberdeen and Cardiff which would involve stop-overs. Then again she's made great progress so I should be oki for next year.
