I did night shifts as a student in final year, it wasn't a requirement (then - it may be now, who knows) but everyone did and it was useful. You might as well start getting used to it as a student as you're going to have to do it at some point. It would be far more daunting to do a night as a Dr if you had never been in a hospital at night (and as I recall it was pretty daunting anyway...)

Also, A&E Fri/Sat nights (til 2or 3am) are an experience not to be missed! It's fun (as a student). And that was compulsary.
