Problem with library books is you have other people's underlining and annotation, you can't do your own (I don't deface library books), there are often pages missing, and then just as you're getting close to the exciting conclusion, some other dumb bastard goes and requests the book, so you have to return your copy. Either that, or the book is only viewable in the library's reading room. I like having my own copies of books, put them up on my bookshelf and show off to visitors to my home how clever and well-read I am

In the US (where I received all of my education thus far), every student is expected to spend $500 a year on books (and very few don't buy books), but medical and law students have even higher expectations, so for me to spend £200 or whatever doesn't seem outrageous. When I was studying physical anthropology, I used the evolution coloring book and it was helpful. It's more fun, too, if you have a bunch of colored pencils.
